‘‘YDP OFFERED ME LIFE EXPERINCE AND PURPOSE WHEN I WAS STUCK”

How YDP is helping the young people of Peterborough ?

‘In Peterborough, the Department for Education reports that 21,6% of students received free school meals at the age of 15 were at university in 2019-20 - a significant increase over the previous year.’

Of 2,037 other pupils in the area not on free school meals, 40.5% were studying in higher education at the age of 19, which was also up from 38.8% in 2018-19.

Youth Dream Project works with children aged 2 to 18. Luke Kennedy and Luke Steele founded this organization in Peterborough in 2014, and it has since spread to Cambridge and Oxford.

Youth Dream Project focuses on bringing sports to young people by visiting primary and secondary schools to teach them about sports. Also, they provide after school clubs, motivational after school sessions, presentations about mental health and well-being for young people.

These adolescents are given guidance, values, and skills they can apply to their lives in these sessions. These sessions are run by qualified coaches with specialized training in the PE area.

YDP offers community programs outside of school hours, host birthday parties, half term camps  and has a football academy.

Founder of YDP, Luke Kennedy previously worked for the police and this gave him the inspiration to start this organization:

“ Delivered some youth intervention programs in certain areas of Peterborough with under privileged young people. I saw the impact that you can have on young people through the sessions and having relationships with them.

“Seeing the impact that I had in those sessions I wanted to create something that could continuously impact young people.”

Many young people have benefited from the YDP and have been taught life lessons and skills that have helped them.  Evander Jose, former student of YDP is now one of their coaches. He says that when he was stuck and didn’t know what he wanted to do as a career and in life, YDP offered him clarity.

“ After college I didn’t know what I wanted to do and I wasn’t sure if university was the place for me. I was already as student at YDP and because I was so stuck they offered me work experience. Coaching at different schools and motivating students to became their better self’s gave me a sense of purpose."

YDP DIDDY'S are sessions for kids ages 2-5. Children and toddlers can participate in them and begin developing fundamental skills. During sessions, children are introduced to their own peer group in a fun and safe setting. They will also develop an understanding of ABCs by participating in all activities.

Luke Kennedy:  “our aim is to deliver a high standard of sports coaching, but through those sessions we want to positively impact every young person that we coach.”
